In 1994, over the course of approximately 100 days, more than 500,000 people (estimates range from 500,000- 1,000,000) were killed in the Rwandan genocide. Rwanda is a land-locked, resource-poor country and one of the poorest in Africa, with approximately 57% of the total population living below the poverty line. One-third of households in Rwanda are headed by women, which are 12% more likely than those headed by men to fall below the poverty line. Indego Africa is a non-profit, social enterprise and lifestyle brand that partners with more than 400 women artisans in Rwanda on a fair trade basis and connects them to the international export market. Indego also invests 100% of its profits from sales and donations back into business training programs in literacy, financial management, design and entrepreneurship for these talented female artisans.
