We spent over a year looking for the perfect diaper/weekend/everything bag. It had to be a great size, have lots of pockets, and look good (in addition to being ethically handmade, of course). We immediately fell in love with the design options that Mongoose offers. The bags are well made, with three interior and two exterior pockets and are neatly trimmed with fine detail. The handles are leather and a long detachable strap is included as well.
Each Mongoose item comes with an information card. See last image (front & back).

The Story: Taking its name from the slender, active mongoose found throughout Southern Africa, Mongoose is an original and innovative design and manufacturing company based in Pretoria. Like the mongoose troops which always look out for each other, Mongoose works with 25 previously disadvantaged women and men who have been trained to manufacture beautiful handcrafted bags, fashionable accessories, elegant homeware and carved buttons made from recycled Jacaranda wood as well as coconut shells. Exquisite hand printed and beaded items are also crafted, all with a strong local indigenous style. International contemporary trends are absorbed by Mongoose, but not departing from its own truly South African flavour. The cotton and linen fabrics used are all 100% natural, colourfast and highly durable with their unique, attractive designs. All the bags are trimmed with local bovine leather, with fine detail ensuring strength and resilience. Just like its namesake, the Mongoose team is tenacious and firm in its commitment to quality, constantly growing the production and honing their skills and quirky South African designs, strong in their community projects and support of local rural artists.
Mongoose proudly reaches out to craft projects in rural areas where they work together with rural printers. 50% of fabrics used to make up their products and ranges are community based projects and printed by hand with silk screens in rural areas.
